About This Sermon:

This Sunday we continue our series… and this week we are looking at the Day of Atonement. This was the highest of holy days for Israel… and it was a day filled with great fear… uncertainty and drama.

It was perhaps the most intricate of ceremonies that literally started before dawn and went well into the late parts of the day. The Day of Atonement shows us to what length God must go to remove the sins of his people… and in this celebration we begin to see how great is our sinfulness and how VAST the grace of God.

In the Day of Atonement, Grace was never assumed

Changes in the celebration
a. Name changed
b. Holy of Holies Changed
c. God’s presence changed
d. High Priest changed

The Details of the Day
a. First was all the ritual cleansing
b. The sacrifice for the High Priest
c. The sacrifice for the Levites
d. The sacrifice for the people
e. The scapegoat for all of them

Lessons from Yom Kippur
a. Sin contaminated every part of the sacrifice
b. Only the blood of another can save --grace
c. God’s wrath does not tolerate sin
d. All the ceremony and sacrifice could not remove a single sin
e. Sin could be removed only by the sacrifice of the Great High Priest

This gift of Grace must be accepted by faith.
